Human beings are living beyond their ecological means. This is true for even a small, developing country like Armenia.
Contributing to this problem are the cities and buildings we live in. Buildings, for instance, use 40% of the world’s energy and emit 50% of its greenhouse gases. The statistics is even more ominous for cities.
Thus, architects, urban planners, and builders have a significant role (and responsibility) in addressing the global challenge of environmental degradation.
Alen Amirkhanian, urban planner, will present an overview of this urgent challenge and architects’ and urban planners’ response to this challenge.
The presentation will be followed by screening of a 30-minute video on green architecture in China. The video is from e² design, an ongoing PBS series about the pioneers and innovators in the field of sustainable architecture, and how their work is producing solutions to pressing environmental and social challenges.
